Due to COVID-19, the majority of the DMVs across the nation have closed. These closures have provided many challenges for commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders. I want to take a few minutes to help clarify some of your questions.

  • All CDLs with an expiration date from March 1 through June 30, 2020, are extended until June 30, 2020. This exemption was granted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and applies to all 50 states.

  • All medical cards with an expiration date from March 1 through June 30, 2020, have also been extended until June 30, 2020. The majority of the medical clinics have remained open, allowing drivers to complete their physicals. I recommend that you continue to get your physicals and keep the current copy with you and update it with the DMV when they reopen.
o  Make sure you are always keeping the current copy or your medical card with you.
  • Haz-Mat endorsements have been extended 180 days for all states, but also provide some specific guidelines. The renewal process has not changed, and fingerprints are still required. The majority of the fingerprinting locations have remained open, and you still need to complete this as soon as you can to avoid delays in processing.

The Dot Transportation, Inc. (DTI) Safety department will continue to monitor Federal and State regulatory updates and changes and keep you notified. Please contact the Safety team with any questions or concerns you have.
